The dream to play the guitar became a must-do when I fell in love with "The House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals.
Lindsay Cox was patient enough to teach me the guitar when I was seventeen years old and soon my parents house was filled with endless guitar pounding and enthusiastic out-of-tune singing.
Good friends and family soon let me know that singing was not my strength, so I withdrew into my private music world and only sung on occasions where alcohol consumption blurred their judgement and lifted my confidence.
Three opportunities came my way to enter a band and for a brief moment I joined in, but my self esteem regarding my singing prevented me from ever truly becoming part of the music scene.
New songs and lyrics would often leap into my spirit when I was tinkering alone with my guitar. I would never share these creations for fear of being ridiculed and had no way of writing them down, so over time they vanished and so did my desire to pick up my guitar.
Before long an exciting career as an IT Geek swept me into long hours of working and often forgotten family commitments consumed whatever time and energy was left.
The music at no8whyre is the result of decades of "wanting to" and eighteen months of "actually doing".
When young children sing, in tune or otherwise, we all applaud and commend them on their fine performance.
Yet as we reach maturity, the same people who smiled and encouraged us can often destroy our self esteem with well meaning comments like "don't give up your day job!", "you should stick to whistling" or "not everybody can sing in tune".
At no point does anyone offer to teach you or uplift you by saying "everybody can sing in tune!" (which is a more accurate statement).
In 2006 I discovered a DVD with simple instructions on how to sing.
In 2007 I discovered a device call a Capo, that re tunes the guitar to a tone more suitable to my voice.
During the same time period, my entire existence collapsed around me and I found myself without a family, a house, a vehicle, no income, huge debts and a great opportunity to feel sorry for myself.
Instead I found strength in my silence, in my prayers, in my true friends and family, and finally picked up my old guitar and embarked on a journey of musical discovery.
